We happily await the 2008 release ~ in the mean time. . .

Conception of the Smart Car

The original concept for the smart car came from the Swatch Watch empire in Switzerland. It was known as the "Swatchmobile" project. The goal in creating a "smart car" was to use a cool design, a hybrid engine and market to the young, pre-family adults. According to Swatch's CEO the cars objective was to "transport two people and a case of beer".

Now the Smart Car is made by GmbH - a company owned 100% by DaimlerChrysler AG, located in Hambach, France. Daimler-Benz AG and Chrysler Corporation merged in 1998. DaimlerChrysler is the world's 5th largest automotive group and has been around in since 1845. (read history here)
